  • The Art and Craft of Quilting / D. Grubbs.

The Art and Craft of Quilting / D. Grubbs.

16/4/18. Reflecting the desire of late 20th-century crafters and artists to learn about and take part in the handmade traditions of the past, quilting has recently experienced a revival. This book provides a complete course in this functional craft and features chapters on materials, techniques, colour and design. The projects comprise a series of lessons, each slightly more advanced than the last, that build a vocabulary of techniques for conceiving and executing designs. Even if readers have never sewn a stitch before, the first project - a doll's patchwork quilt - should be well within their grasp. Experienced quilters should appreciate the approach to colour and design that evolves from the first quilt through to the last. In addition to such fundamental procedures as estiming yardage, developing a layout, choosing fabrics, piecing and quilting, each demonstration is accompanied by a "colour note" that contains information on how colour, line and shape can work most effectively within a particular pattern. Also included are 14 additional patterns, each with a piecing sequence diagram and an example of a completed square.

  • The Classic Magic of Larry Jennings. / M. Maxwell

The Classic Magic of Larry Jennings. / M. Maxwell

L & L Publishing produced a classic in 1986 when they published Mike Maxwell's The Classic Magic of Larry Jennings. Within its 267 pages are countless classics by the late card and coin manipulator Larry Jennings. Larry was a student of the great Dai Vernon, and it most definitely shows in his work. With Forewords by Dai Vernon and Charlie Miller, and a Preface by John Thompson, it is evident that Larry ranks among the masters. The book contains 66 items with cards and coins, along with Larry's famous Single Cup and Balls routine.  Jennings' routines are all wonderful examples of his genius, and his card moves are testimony to his tremendous technical skill. His tricks range from the most surprising, knuckle-busting routine to his take on a classic, almost self-working effect.
